Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage (2021)

September 30, 2021 – Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage.

Alright. So, similar reasons I wasn’t 100% a fan of the first one carry on into this movie. But I kind of expected that, so that’s acceptable. It wasn’t bad. It was fun, had some laughs, was a bit more of that buddy cop vibe. It actually went by a lot faster than I thought it would.

Now, I will say that I have the same problem I had with DC’s Joker movie as with what I expected to happen with Cletus Kasady’s character. They did humanize him, and that’s not who he is. Both Joker and Carnage represent chaotic evil. There should never be any logical or rational explanation for the things they do. That’s not the point of characters like these. And they did add something to his story which was just not anything remotely close to how his character yet would be like. But eh.

I also think this movie should have been a hard R-rated horror thriller. Kasady’s character is one of the most twisted, demented, and horrifying characters in all of comics, and that’s without the Carnage symbiote. And I didn’t really see that side of him in this because it was PG-13. We get that he’s a serial killer, but the fear that one feels reading his character in the comics is emphasized by seeing what he does and reading what he says.

Also, as I said when he was cast, I don’t think Woody Harrelson was the right actor for this role. He did okay and was creepy and such, but it wasn’t how I would have expected the character to be portrayed. And the rating may have had to do with that too, but it never say right with me.

Other than those aspects of the movie, it wasn’t horrible. The story wasn’t that complicated and as I said, it went by quickly. There was also less time spent on the side characters. Not sure if that hurt or helped, but I just noticed that.

The most important part of this movie is:

Mid-credit scene: Um. YES. Holy crap, yes. This made the whole movie worth it XD. I have my theories XD

End-credit scene: No

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)

September 1, 2021 – Allllrighty! Shang-Chi. First off, a lot of action, and the choreography for the fights was brilliant!! A lot happened in the movie, the set up was done well, we get the lay of the land straight away (Certainly what should have been done with Iron Fist). The world shown to us is so expansive. We get pieces of the story that are slowly woven together as we progress.

I enjoyed all of the character also. The expected ones, and the unexpected ones…and the very unexpected ones. XD haha. Shang-Chi in the comics is a bit cocky and as well he should be, he’s the master of Kung fu. One of the best or the best hand-to-hand combat character in marvel (at least on earth). This certainly was a more relatable characterization. Katy (Awkwafina’s character) was also enjoyable. I was a little worried that she may be too much of a distraction, but she wasn’t. The humor that she gave and others worked well at every moment.

The story itself wasn’t too complicated to follow and each act seemed to flow well into the next. It was great to see a new property be brought to life in the MCU again ^__^ I’m happy they made this and hope that the success of this leads to Iron Fist and other similar characters getting their due. Can’t wait to see this again tomorrow!

Mid-credit scene: OMG Yes. XD (once you’ve seen it, talk to me about it!!)

End-credit scene: Indeed, and a little bit surprising, but not in a huge way. Good to know.

The next issues of Laila Starr, MTG and Sweet Paprika dropped, New Mutants (at this point I got started getting this story arc because it was Shadow King related and I realized Gabby was in this run with a new name, Scout), Jen had gone Red (Room) Hulk, Captain Marvel entered The Last of the Marvels arc (which recently ended. Freaking Vox), we got the next issue of Demon Days, Sinister War continued, Wiccan and Hulking got a Last Annihilation special as Planet Dormmmu’s (yes) Mindless Ones raged around the galaxy, we got Dark Ages (this was advertised and I was initially decently excited and then once I read the first issue, I realized it wasn’t the 616 universe. It’s still a cool story, but I’d thought it was canon.), at this point in the High Republic, the comics skipped forward a bit after the events of a recent HR novel, so I had to pause reading these since these issues, Midnighter got an annual issue to finish off the stories from Action Comics side-stories, this Yara issue had some fantastic art in it (I mean the cover is gorgeous too), Roy and Jade end up meeting each other in Infinite Frontier and Barry was forced to summon people to Omega Planet as Darkseid’s plans were coming to a head, Fear State began in Gotham as Scarecrow wanted to push the city beyond fear itself, and Aquaman got its 80th Anniversary issue.
