Free Comic Book Day 2025 (the first Saturday in May annually)

I wasn’t able to attend this year because I was elsewhere, but I got all the issues I intended to pick up. All have some material reprinted of new material to tease what’s to come. I’m still woefully behind in reading, but I’ll be happy to get to these eventually. Though I suppose I said that for last year’s issues and I’m not even to them yet, haha.

Nick said there were a decent amount of people this year, which is always nice to hear.

April 30, 2025

Twas a small pile for this specific week. Next week’s will be a normal one.

This is the final issue for The Question. The Dakota-verse got a Power Company special. The next issue of We Are Yesterday dropped. Poe Dameron got a new miniseries. The Battle of Eriadu continues in all High Republic titles. Logan and Kitty got a new flashback miniseries by Chris Claremont. The TVA meet an MCU variant Scarlett Witch. Kid Juggernaut got a printed edition of the Marvel’s Voices Infinity comics 1-6. The next NY X dropped. And One World Under Doom continues.

The next NY X cover and its variant.

Of course for Kamala being on them both.

Fun Fantastic Four covers! Still keeping my fingers crossed about this long connecting cover set.

Always happy to see a Galloway cover. And this is one of the Disney crossover covers of course.

I didn’t actually intend to get the main cover for this, but I decided to get it anyway. And of course, there’s the next movie variant.

Phil Noto just does such a great job with these covers.

I can’t really remember the specific reason I wanted this TVA cover, I mean, in relation to what variant cover section it’ll be in. And I had to get this Farscape variant!

April 2025 Late Issues

Top two are variants for that issue of SWI that I got as gifts for someone. The next two items are the first volumes of those two titles. The Detective Comics variant I completely forgot about. It’s from October of last year!! The Deadpool is from a few weeks ago, it’s a main cover. The Magik issue is also recent. That Bad Batch variant is also for a gift. And that Jedi Knights main cover is just another copy.

I wanted this Detective Comics variant cuz of the legacy represented on it. And I just liked the double designs of Magik on that cover.

Thunderbolts* (May 1, 2025)

That was a fantastic movie!

I certainly understand why people have been saying they liked it. It was fun, funny, action-packed, and hit with the emotions.

Seeing these actors play off of each other was a delight. Everyone’s chemistry was amazing. Everyone did a fantastic job! We have a good amount of time with all the characters since they are mostly together for the whole movie.

The threat, while not unexpected, is complex and very well done. Considering what it was, how it was dealt with, it made sense. But there is still potential there in the future.

The movie sped by! I wanted to stay in the world for longer! Though, the next MCU movie is in July, so it’s not a long wait.

The humor was well-placed and well-timed. The heart of the movie was felt throughout it. Of course there will be comparisons to The Suicide Squad/Taskforce X, but I think they did find a way to play the concept a bit differently. And I think it worked well.

Oh and the visuals were great!

It was nice to catch up with these characters even if we didn’t get a lot of updates from some of them.

There was a big theme of mental health throughout the movie and I really liked seeing that.

All-in-all, I had fun watching this and certainly think most people will enjoy it.

Mid-credit scene: A short funny one.

End-credit scene: Yes. Talking about things yet to come. I am intrigued by things hinted at.

April 23, 2025

We got the final issue of the Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man prequel comic. The X-Men are having a tough time. X-Force got its 300th issue!!! Sabretooth got its final issue too. I think this is the penultimate issue of The Infinity Watch. The next issue of One World under Doom dropped. The Masters of Evil stop by the Avengers. We got to know a bit more about Gold Tiger. The Hush sequel continues in Batman. This run of Superman got to its 25th issue. We got part two of the We Are Yesterday event. And we got the final issue of Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor.

It’s a good time for the X-books! X-Force got to issue 300! And it’s been a while since the previous issue of Sabretooth dropped, I love this variant!

Had to get a cover with Coulson on it, even if he weren’t the new incarnation of Death. And this is the next Marvel Handbook cover.

I love this very dynamic Dauterman variant! And this is another of that Marvel Universe connecting set.

Happy to have another Rian Gonzales cover! And this Green Lantern Dark cover by Kevin Wada is neat!

It’s fun that Nakayama got to have two covers on one issue! The first one is the main cover for the issue, which looks amazing. And the other cover is part of the April Fool’s set.

This is such a lovely Forbes variant for Power Girl and co.

There were so many great covers for the 25th issue of this run! These are the ones I got.

This is such a fantastic wraparound newspaper variant by Dan Mora!

Got the blank variant. I liked Dekal’s cover of Lois. And of course I love this Brad Walker 90’s inspired cover.

When I first saw this Szerdy cover, my brain went to, oh cool it’s Scarlet Witch and Miss Martian! And then I was like wait, that makes no sense, it’s Star Sapphire. Though, either way I got it for M’gann. And I liked this Ward cover of Metamorpho.

April 16, 2025

Back to normal posts! There was one Late Issue, but since it’s part of a collection, I decided to just wait to post it.

I think this is a new arc for Selina, I wonder what her sins are. Deathstroke returns in Titans! Bruce and Diana are solving a murder in her comic. Nightwing seems to be on the bad side of the law. The All-In era had its first crossover mini event between the Batman/Superman World’s Finest and Justice League Unlimited titles called We Are Yesterday. I think the story involves bringing past versions of villains and heroes to present day. The Justice League drops by the New Gods. Superman Day was during this week, so we got a Summer of Superman special. Wolverine celebrated it’s 400th issue!!!! Cable is not having a good time in his title. Doom made his own Avengers in a tie-in title Superior Avengers. We got a Venomverse issue. And we got an Action Comics 1 facsimile edition.

Another fun Cho variant, and Sabine Rich did the Selina drawing inside Cho’s design! And this is such a nice InHyuk Lee cover!

Slade is back and is on all these covers. For my Deathstroke collection of course. I’m not sure if this costume is different than his previous one, it’s been a little bit since we last saw him.

I’m not even sure what the character is on this Derrick Chew cover, but she looks great! Jorge Corona and Sarah Stern did a great job on this color-bleed Absolute Flash cover! Nimit Malavia brings us a colorful variant for New Gods. Sweeney Boo crafted a fun Zatanna cover. I had to get this crossover comic because of Darksied. And I always love seeing a David Aja cover!

There were many to choose from for Wolverine’s 400th issue, and these are the covers I liked best. The main cover is so good! And the Samurai themed one by Daniel Warren Johnson is amazing! And of course, I had to get the Sabretooth one by Bengus!

I am still getting over my traumatic time dealing with all the failed connecting covers I took photos of for my completed collections posts, but I am still trusting that this very many-issue connecting cover set by Chris Giarrusso will actually connect properly. I do really like the character designs. And I feel like it’s been a bit since I got a Saowee variant! Everyone looks great on the cover.

I think I’d added this Superior Avengers cover as a double for some other reason, but since I couldn’t remember why, I decided to get the copy just because I love the shades of orange in the background. And this Dan Mora homage variant is just stunning!

Completed Variant Sets 10 — April 25, 2025

So, I realized when I was taking the photos for the second set, that I had already taken photos for the first set a couple years ago, but it was before I started this blog and I guess when I was checking my backlog of photos for this blog, I forgot this first set. So in Completed Variant Sets 1, this should have been the first set posted. It’s the amazing InHyuk Lee covers for AAPI Heritage Month from 2021. Now, it’s possible I have posted some of this set and completely forgot, but I’m going to assume I haven’t.

These are just so gorgeous!! The details are wonderful, the characters are all great. The coloring and line-work are on-point.

And this is the set from 2023. Aaaand for some reason I forgot to take a photo of the third issue individually. So I have to go get it out of its bag and board and take the photo. Ridiculous.

And of course I love these too for all the same reasons. I had been hoping we’d get another set this May, but seemingly not.

Okay, NOW I’m done with these variant posts! That took a couple hours to do haha. Tomorrow I’ll post my normal new comics posts.

Completed Variant Sets 9 — April 25, 2025

Of course I love the Titans, and I love legacy. So these Nicola Scott covers are fantastic!

I love seeing their history literally behind them pushing them forward.

I was so excited to get these Todd McFarlane Action Figure variants! Such a creative way to do variants! I’m not sure if there have been action figure variants that are actual action figures or just design variants for action figures like John Tyler Christopher likes to do.

These are so great! I think there is another recent set, which will be on here at a later date.

Here’s another sequential art set! These are of course by InHyuk Lee.

I wanted the photo to follow the narrative.

It’s always tough to get a good photo of a foil cover. In my normal posts I do decently, but I really like how these came out!

These look amazing next to each other too!! I need someone to help me figure out the best way to display foil covers. All three of these artists did a great job with these covers.

Here we are, at the 37 cover set! Of course it’s an Alex Ross set. In 2020, he did a Timeless set focusing on (35 or 36) heroes (based off of a big mural of the characters all together). This set is based on another mural focusing on the villains. And he has another set coming out this year with 16 heroes. I love these so much. Not only because of Ross’ art, but because of the white space and the colors.

And here they all are together and it’s wonderful!

I was going to end with this set and have the set I’m going to have in the next post be before this set, but I forgot about something to do with that set that I want to have separate. So, the next post will be the last for these complete sets.

Completed Variant Sets 8 — April 25, 2025

So the main covers for this Peacemaker miniseries are basically the same as these, but these are styled like movie posters and I love covers that are as such! These are all by Chris Anka.

They look great together! I’m leaning towards framing them side-by-side instead of getting them slabbed so it’s like a set of movie posters next to each other. I actually haven’t looked up if anything of these are based on actual movie posters or not. I mean issue 5 looks like it’s based off of the Kindergarten Cop movie poster. And I’m sure at least one of these is based on Die Hard considering the title. Oh and the last one is certainly paying homage to Star Wars.

Speaking of movie poster covers, these Silk covers are fun! She’s trapped in dreams during this arc, those are the dreams.

All of these covers are by David Johnson. And again, not sure about framed or in a profolio or something else for display.

These absolute works of art are all by Francesco Mattina. He’s one of my first artists of whom I collected covers from when I started collecting comics.

These look amazing next to each other! I think framing for this set.

Alright. So, 20 issues in this set. Dustin Nguyen did an AMAZING job with all of these. The details and tone are fantastic.

They look wonderful together! these also I don’t know if I want to frame them or slab them. The problem with framing them all like this would be that they are all different thicknesses, so I don’t know how easy or difficult it would be to make happen.

The next post will be the last one of these for now. and also have a larger set than these 20!

Completed Variant Sets 7 — April 25, 2025

This post should be less traumatic! Haha.

Having said that, I did forget to take a photo of these next to each other, but that’s fine. The cover art in this set is all based off of album covers I think. Though, I don’t know which ones, so if anyone would like to chip-in, I’ll add those details whenever I learn them. The first issue is a wraparound cover too, but I think I had posted that back when I got it. So, the first four issues of this miniseries had that X-Men 1 homage connecting cover set that I posted long ago. These were the set covers for the last 4 issues of the miniseries. This was just a fun set of variants.

The next set is an Artgerm set featuring Batman and some other character from Gotham.

As always, I love Artgerm’s art!

This next set of three is by David Marquez protesting the three Batgirls.

Such a great use of light and shadow! and also wonderful bright colors. I hadn’t noticed this before, but I like how the pink/purple background in the first cover leads into the inner cape of Stephanie and her yellow background leads to Babs’ yellow inner cape.

Jen Bartel continues to be amazing. I LOVE these streetwear/party attire that she dressed the Titans up in for these covers. I still don’t know if I want them framed or slabbed!

Look how stunning they look together!…Is she ever makes more of these but for some of the villains, like Rose Wilson (specifically, haha), I’d love that!

Continuing with Jen Bartel, her She-Hulk cover run is so gorgeous! I love the colors, aesthetic and just everything about all of these.

Such a great set of 15! And after this run ended, Jen continued as the main cover artist for the next run.

This final set for this post is a corner box themed set by Mark Brooks.

I always enjoy Brooks’ art. It’s so detailed and has so much character. I love getting corner box art all blown up for a cover.

The next post will have one set that overpowers the other sets, haha.
