Wow.
Such a fantastic movie!
First of all, similar to the previous movie, this starts off with action straight off-the-bat. The visuals were as amazing as G-1. Probably better but I don’t know visuals as well as some do. But to me they were gorgeous.
The music in this movie was as intense as the first one. It kept the tension when it needed to and the emotions of the characters when necessary.
The characters were just as compelling as before, I mean, it’s most of the characters returning with a couple new ones. It’s been 3 years in the real world since the first movie and 2 years in-world since the events of the first movie. So, it’s expected that not many of the previous cast would just go away. One of the new characters was more central than the others and was great! The acting all-around was just spectacular. The emotions always hit hard. We felt with each situation and saw different choices being made and the hardship that the characters were put through.
The story was pretty good. The way it started certainly surprised me. Things just immediately escalate. The first problem takes up a good chunk of the movie and then the rest of the story hits us like a train. And similarly as the first movie, this was a character movie that happened to involve Kaiju. Though, I think this was more focused on the ensemble than one character. The first movie was really events circling then lead and this didn’t really focus on any of the characters as narrowly. But, I didn’t really mind that, as this movie was much more fast-paced than the first.
The first movie had down-time between attacks or other events and this movie almost had us on our toes throughout.
And from what I could tell, there wasn’t a broadcasted twist like the first movie. I do love Minus One very much, but it’s a 99% amazing movie for me. The twist near the end was very strongly hinted at earlier in the movie and it didn’t catch me by surprise. I wish that they’d cut a few seconds of that scene to really have a surprise. And this didn’t seem to have anything like that. It was such an intense journey. The human scenes where strong emotions were being displayed hit hard.
After watching the first movie there were hints at what was to come, and I think that this movie delivered on those hints perfectly. This movie doesn’t seem to have any hints at more to come and I wouldn’t mind if we don’t get a Godzilla 1 or whatever it could be called. This would be a great dualogy. But if they did, I would love a greater time-jump to see these characters older.
I’m certainly glad that they made this movie!
