January 18, 2023

The last issue of Han & Chewie had Chewie falling off a moving train, so, we’ll see how that works out. This issue of Wakanda has my attention because I want to know more about Tosin. Things are getting crazy in Immortal X-Men. Also, Strange has been really exciting. Frank is going one-on-one with Ares. I can’t remember what’s happening in Hulk. I’m wondering what the conflict will be between Tony and Riri. I’m very happy to see more Wasp. Janet has appeared in in Nadia’s comics and I’m glad they’re both going to be in this. More Dark Web issues. Avengers Assemble continues to barrel through everything, its a crazy war. Always happy to read another issue of the Harley animated title. More mind-swapping madness with Batgirls, though I need to get the A cover next time I get comics. This is the last issue of Mary Marvel’s miniseries. This issue of Lazarus Planet has Dreamer in it, so I can’t wait to get to it. And finally, that is the 100th issue of Nightwing!

I wasn’t sure about getting these variants, but I did like this cover when I saw it in person even more, so I decided to get the set.

I don’t get this artist’s covers often, but I really liked this one. It’s one of those artists where you know you’d get every cover they do but that would be way too many, haha.

I really like Tosin’s character in design and as a character, so had to get this.

I always try to get covers with Riri on them, so this arc was a happy surprise for me. And another for the hall of armor set! I have no idea how I’ll display this set, it’s a lot of covers!

Another Dauterman collage! Love these covers.

Another of these decades half covers for this event. I really have no idea what these will all look like.

Two more homage covers! I didn’t realize what the Immortal X-men cover was based on at first, haha. That’ll be in the collection post, if you can’t guess.

Another glorious Artgerm cover!

Dreamer! As brought to life by the wonderful Jen Bartel.

The wraparound variant for Nightwing 100. Love this so much! Y’all know I love covers that show character legacy. Also, this run of Nightwing has been amazing.

January 11, 2023

Again, not read any of these yet.

Black Cloak I initially got just for the variant cover by Peach Momoko, but I also read what the issue was about and thought I’d read it too, so beyond what I read, and I can’t remember what that was, I know nothing else about this title. As always, Vader has been great, so I assume this issue will be no different. the arc in Ghost Rider is coming to a head. I know that Logan is having a hard time via Beast’s machinations. Also, I really don’t like the version of Beast that’s been in the comics for the past decade or two. But I see the character in the characterization of his counterpart from the X-Men Animated Series, so, I’m a bit bias. I’m excited to get to X-Men because I think we’ll finally get an update on what’s going on with Laura and Laura and all that confusion. The last Carnage issue ended in a way that confused me, so I hope that things might be clarified in this issue. T’Challa is just continuing to have a bad time. Can’t wait to get it Daredevil! Same for Monica’s journey. And of course there are more issues from Dark Web, which will be over by the next NCBD posts I make.

I can’t quite remember what was going on in Wonder Woman, but Wonder Girl is stopping by, so that’s always fun. This Flash issue is the first in a new arc called the One Minute War. I am indeed intrigued. This is the last issue of Batman: Urban Legends, though I think there is another title that will start that has a similar anthology theme in a couple months. Here’s a new run of the Batman: The Animated Series comic. This surprised me when I saw that it was dropping this week when I was adding to my subscriptions a couple months ago. And the Lazarus Planet event has started for DC.

Covers below

As mentioned before, this is the Momoko cover. I liked that there was a chromatic theme of pink to this. Usually her covers are the image surrounded by white or a full cover of something, this was a nice difference.

This is the A cover and one of the variants for this Vader issue. The A Cover is another Razzah cover. And the variant is the 40th Anniversary ROTJ cover. With these movie anniversary covers when they’ve come, I certainly don’t get all 40 covers, I think I’ve stuck to getting the fist and last ones. Though I can’t remember what I did for the ones that we got in 2017 and 2020.

This was an odd cover to see. It is paying homage to the iconic Days of Future Past cover, but it’s an A cover. I certainly thought that with this month being homage variant cover month that this would have been the homage variant for this issue, but nope. But yeah, many seemed to have been slain last issue, so we’ll see what’s up in this issue.

This variant I hadn’t intended on getting but it was but in my pile and the more I looked at it, the more I liked it. So I just went for it. The details and stunning.

These variants for Lazarus Planet are great. The first one is a Mattina cover and I think it’s been a while since I’ve picked up one of his covers. He’s a fantastic artist. The other one was another variant that was in my box that I didn’t intend to be there but I ended up liking it enough to keep it. Though I do have another variant for this issue coming.

This tile has been a great way to tell many stories involving the bat-family, and others, at once. I mean pretty much all these characters and more. It was a great choice for an A cover for this final issue.

And this variant for it was fantastic. Even if it’s not a full movie poster cover, it’s close enough.

The next Dark Web covers. Every week that wasted web design (pun not intended) frustrates me!

The next homage covers. Hopefully, I can figure out which classic covers all of them are from by the time I do the collection post.

This is another wonderful Nakayama cover! The way he shades and lights his colors on his covers is just so well done. Every time!

January 2023 Late Issues

Since the comic book store I go to has changed hands, there will be many delayed issues for a while, so these Late posts will be a bit more populated than usual (similar to the last one with all the magazines). they’re switching to an online system and it’ll take a while to input everyone and get things moving.

It’s nice to be caught up with DWM finally! Got a Strange Academy 1 finally, now I’m one step closer to starting the title. And got one of the variants that wasn’t in my pile last week.

Another Window shades variant! Whenever this collection ends, it’ll be interesting to see them all together since some of them look similar and others are drastically different in layout.

January 4, 2023

As always, loving Unnatural. Same with MTG. And I saw what the cover was for the next issue and I am SUPER happy about it. I will certainly share my glee when that issue arrives. X-Force and other X-titles I think have had this villain around for a while and I think we’re finally getting a big arc with them. We’ll see! Carol and co are dealing with Brood problems. There’s still a mystery with the Fantastic Four (though it’s a similar mystery as in Spiderman’s current ASM run, I guess the writers all liked the mystery idea). Scarlet Witch finally has a new run! I’m very excited, though I have no idea what it’ll be about.

Oh look it’s the next run of Shang-Chi right away. I keep wondering if all these runs are ramping up to something specific or they’re just giving a bunch of creators a chance to have some firsts credits. Either way I’m enjoying this ongoing story. This Secret Invasion miniseries is interesting, but I still think they should have named it something else, at least something similar but not he same title. I know they only did this as a way to promote the Secret Invasion Disney+ show. The next issues of both Spider-Man events and Avengers Assemble dropped. And we got issue two of the Planet Hulk miniseries. Still loving the Poison Ivy series and can’t wait for more. And I think a new arc started in Batman.

Another many covers to follow.

I still wish this run had had more variant artists, but I’ve enjoyed this artists B covers for each issue.

The next Dark Web cover and another Window Shades variant. I will be curious to see what all these window shades covers will look like together. I keep not expecting more of them but they keep coming!

This issue I got by accident it seems but it’s 1:25 cover, so that will be nice to hold onto for a while. The variant I actually wanted hopefully will get here eventually.

Another gorgeous Frison cover.

Double Artgerm! I always am surprised by Artgerm covers that have men on them since I’m so used to him making female-focused covers most of the time. I almost missed the Batman cover. Though the Phoenix cover is a little damaged, so hopefully I can get another copy later.

Again, the Artgerm, and then there’s the decade connecting variant, and finally there’s the homage cover.

Marvel decided to have homage covers this month, so there are a lot here and more to come. Which of course means that I got no monetary break from all the December covers from DC. Previously, I had mentioned the artists and what covers each cover is paying homage to in this weekly post, but I think from now on for collection covers, I’ll put all that info in the completed collection post later on. But some of these certainly should be obvious. And that Fantastic Four variant that mentioned was another homage cover. But yeah, y’all will have to wait till that completed collection post to get all the information on these. Though I will say that the DOFP homage cover is a Jen Bartel cover and I forgot that completely, so I’ll need another copy of it.

December 28, 2022

Whenever it’s 6 rows of issues taking the first photo is always a challenge. Hence the closer photos below it.

And of course, I’ve not started any of these yet. I can’t start this run of Strange Academy yet for two reasons, I still have to read the first run, of which I’m waiting for the collected edition to come out, and I don’t have issue 1 of the new run yet. I’ll have to ask my store what’s up with that. I’m enjoying Midnight Suns. The Murderworld miniseries apparently connects with what Natasha is doing, so I decided to get the run. The story in both Capt. America titles are great. The X-Terminators title has been fun. I’m enjoying the Carnage run and wonder what it’s leading to. Though I know there’s another symbiote event coming next summer, so I guess it’s leading to that or there will be some connection somehow. We’ll see. Loving She-Hulk. New Mutants run ends with this issue I think, at least the arc ends here but there doesn’t seem to be another issue of this run next. And the weird Shang-Chi continuous multi-run continues with this run ending and a new one starting in the next post for the first week of January.

The Yoda title intrigues me. Dark Web continues and I can actually read the first half of issues of the event since these 3 have arrived. The next Timeless annual issues dropped, I’ll be interested in seeing what may be to come for the next year or so, though I can’t really remember what was hinted at in last year’s Timeless issue. I was even confused as to what this issues was since I thought it was a reprint of last year’s one-shot of the same title. I’m liking the Time Drake story, but I’m not a fan of the art of the artist of the series, he’s done other titles and I don’t don’t like how the characters look via his style. The Harley arc is fun with a Dark Multiverse version of her. I liked the first issue of Blue Beetle, let’s see how the rest is.

Detective Comics is starting a new arc and I always like a Mr. Freeze story. Still there’s still no official stance on whether season 5 of Young Justice will happen (the show is sitting in limbo as this WB Discovery deal gets sorted out), I’m savoring this tie-in comic. They made us wait for this John Stewart Green Lantern one-shot for a few months, I’m excited for it! Clark Kent is starting a new arc in Action Comics and I think it’s part of the new era of DC starting after the Lazarus Planet event ends. And I’m very excited for the special that has many writers and artists taking on versions of DC characters that Stan Lee had designed. And finally we have the third and final issue of Wonder Woman: Historia. As y’all know I’ve LOVED the art in this title and I don’t want this to end, but I hope it inspires the artist to make anther title like this at some point. But they certainly deserve a break since it takes so long to make the art for this title.

Many covers to follow!

Just the next Dark Web covers.

The next holiday postcard cover.

Another X-treme themed character! Had to get Carnage!

I really like the cover artist of this, I’ve seen their art around some other titles and I just like when they have had covers for this title.

Here is another homage to Action Comics #1 It’s always nice to get a new take on it. And I love this other variant with Mister Mxyzptlk and his wife Nyxlygsptlnz (or Ms. Gsptlnz) in that fanboy room of his. Great Easter eggs.

Another brilliant David Nakayama cover! I love the reds stand out on the cover.

I didn’t read this title but I kept an eye out for covers I’d like and I love that the final cover and its variant both were Darkseid themed.

As usual, here’s the next Jen Bartel cover and another wonderful Peach Momoko variant.

I was surprised to see a Jenny Frison variant from this crossover comic. It’s a stunning cover. And wow. The other variant is a TRIPLE GATEFOLD!!! I think the only other one I’ve seen is that famous X-Men cover. It just looks amazing.

I mean look at that!!

December 2022 Late Issues 3

Happy New Year! I’m late posting since I had to wait a couple extra days to get new comics.

And the comic book store I go to finally opened to the public again (instead of being only curbside pickup since the pandemic started). So it was nice to be in the store again.

Though the two people I’ve known the past 9 years decided to retire, so I have to get to know the new person running the store. I’m a bit apprehensive about such a big change and I really enjoyed chatting with Joel and Greg. Hopefully I can foster a similar relationship with the new person eventually.

And for the new year and the store opening up properly again there was a sale, so I decided to get all the magazines I had in my box since this would be the cheapest I would get them for. Hence all the magazines in this post. I’m glad I don’t have to worry about them piling up for a while now.

Photos of covers below.

This is the next decade themed connecting (though I”m not sure how) cover for the Avengers Assemble event.

Another awesome cover by David Nakayama!

DC had a few winter postcard themed covers. There was one for a Flash issue but the cover was cancelled for some reason.

And of course this gorgeous Jen Bartel cover.

December 21, 2022

Since I’m posting this on Christmas Eve, Merry Christmas to those who celebrate! Also, Happy Hanukkah to those of celebrated that during this past week. And Happy Kwanzaa to those who will celebrate that next week! And Happy Holidays to everyone else!

The next issue of Hitomi dropped. The Wakanda run is great. All the X-titles have been good. T’Challa has been having a bad few years. Hopefully Clea and Stephen can figure this situation out soon! The next issue of the Avengers Assemble event dropped. The next could issues for Dark Web dropped too including Kamala’s first of two issues! I still hope for a new run for her soon and not just a miniseries this time. Fingers crossed. Catwoman got her 50th issue. And Nightwing is at #99 this week. The BvR mini-event is heating up. The next issue of the Harley animated series tie-in comic dropped. And finally, the final issue of Dark Crisis dropped with many variants.

So many covers to talk about below!

I loved this cover because it shows an Avengers-like team from the past. I assume this is the next fully new team after the 1 Million BC Avengers team. I would love to have covers from every era eventually, even if we haven’t met some of the characters yet.

Another fantastic Peach Momoko cover. Betsy looks great!

Of course I had to get another other copy of the A cover and then the only variant for this issue. I still hope that a new run will come for Ms. Marvel because of people liking the show. But we’ll see, maybe they’re waiting till after “The Marvels” movie debuts next year.

The next in the non-connecting-but-should-connect cover for Gold Goblin 2.

This great Catwoman cover is by Stjepan Šejić. I was so excited to see a new cover by him.

I thought that this issue would have a similar creative theme like the past few covers for Nightwing have had, and this is nice, but I mainly just got it so it could be part of the set. Can’t wait to get issue 100 soon!

This is the first in the next variant covers set for the DCeased title. I hadn’t even realized that this was a wraparound cover at first. I almost missed it. I’m not quite sure what this is paying homage too, I think it’s album covers. Someone let me know!

This one I got mainly because Spectre is in the background.

I really like this A cover for the next Harley animated series issue. Very well done.

These are all the variants for the final Dark Crisis issue that I got. There are many more.

This is paying homage to the Final Crisis cover art of the hardcover by J.G. Jones.

This is the glorious tribute cover for the wonderful George Pérez. I was hoping this would get a wraparound variant and it did! Though I also wanted a poster of this. Now, if I forgot that there was a poster I got already, forgive me, haha.

These are all the DC characters he created, helped create, or wrote or drew for over his life.

If you want to know who drew which character, take a look.

These are the promo images for the new era of DC (which I think starts after the Lazarus event). I’m not sure, but I saw that there are partner images to these that are the younger hero counterparts to each of these characters. But I’m not sure if they will be covers or not. So, until I know for sure, I’ll post these here and if the others pop up, I’ll make a completed collection post for all 8 covers. But Dan Mora has been doing a lot of covers recently, I’m enjoying them.

December 14, 2022

I haven’t started these yet since I just took the photos before posting these.

I’m excited for WildC.A.T.S. Batgirls has a fun arc going on. I think that Superman SOK issue is late since that Kal-El returns special dropped last time. The penultimate (I’m 95% sure it is. Some of these events have an aftermath issue, so I’m not sure. But the “last” issue of the event is in the next week’s post) Dark Crisis issue dropped. That Harley book I’ll get to when I talk about the variant below. The Planet Hulk story is interesting since it takes place a thousand years in the future. So, apparently I have been wrong and this Savage Avengers run doesn’t connect to the Avengers Assemble event more directly. I thought that they would connect, but it’s only been Avengers and Avengers Forever that have crossed over. It’s so weird that there are multiversal elements in the Savage Avengers plot and there’s even a Deathlock and mention of Avenger Prime. But I guess it won’t cross over into the event. And here is the Dark Web event truly starting beyond the first issue. I have some things to say about the covers below. It’s a bit nuts. But I’m liking the story even though I still am not sure if this is before or after the End of the Spider-verse event. Iron Man is starting a new run. And Photon is getting her first title! There seem to have been two one-shots in the late 80’s and early 90’s respectively, so this is great for Monica Rambeau’s character.

Covers below.

So, I’ve mentioned before that I thought these Dark Web A covers could connect once I got them and could see them next to one-another, but sadly, they don’t seem to. Which I think is a wasted opportunity. There are 18 issues in this event, and that could have made a nice 3×6 grid set of connecting covers in the shape of an actual web in the background with all the various cover artist’s art in the foreground. It could have looked amazing all together. It seems like a waste of a background web design in an event with web in the name. So now I will just have all these issues double-ordered. I’ll have have them all in a Dark Web set anyway. They’ll still look nice together when I have all the ones with the web background (Yes there are a couple a covers of issues in this event that don’t have the web background, which makes less sense). Oh but that’s not all. It seems that the two connecting covers here and in the next photo, are the only connecting covers in the event at all! I thought that even if they didn’t have a big collage set, that they would at least have a few connecting covers throughout the event, but nope. So I guess that means that will be the next completed set cover post I’ll make. Oh, but wait, there’s more! AMS 15 comes before Dark Web: X-Men 1. And yet, the cover for DW:XM 1 shows the first connecting image and the ASM 15 variant is the second connecting image. That just seems like a logistical error that they couldn’t catch in time. But wow, they really didn’t organize the variants for this event very well. Though I suppose that means I spend less money, so, woot! And of course all the covers look great.

This new Iron Man run has a nice set of connecting covers coming starting with this one. We’ll have a bunch of covers with Tony’s hall of armor on display. I might event find a good multi-comic display frame and display these an action figure or art in the future. I’m not sure yet. Though finding good frames for that purpose has been tough.

I really love this cover. I think this is my favorite of the bunch. The colors and the details are just brilliant.

Now this, and the A cover, are interesting (I totally forgot about this). This is a little celebration of some of the popular variant covers from the past years depicting Harley. Some of the covers inside I have, most of the others I’ve seen before and I couple others I hadn’t seen. It’s a nice little compendium. Normally I’ve seen variants collected in a particular artist’s portfolio collection book, so this was a surprise. And then another surprise since I forgot about it.

December 2022 Late Issues 2

Late variants and normal issues. The first two are from November and the others are from December 7th. Talking about the variants below.

So, Marvel have been starting these Demonized variants that are themed for the Dark Web event. I’ve seen some and liked them but didn’t love them enough to get them or they were exclusives or incentive covers. This one was the first that I saw that wowed me.

Of course, here’s another fun Momoko cover.

I actually hadn’t planned on getting this one but I ended up liking it. I think I have another Miles graffiti cover somewhere, and I’ve seen others over the past few years, but hadn’t gotten them.

This is certainly my favorite cover of this bunch. This is technically more of a movie poster cover than those Star Wars ones that I posted the completed variant set for in the post before the Avatar 2 post. Mainly because this one has the creative team on the bottom in that font that is used in movie posters for the cast and creatives involved in the movie. I had thought I would display those SW covers together but I may use them and this to start a movie poster themed variant cover part of my collection.
