Dark Phoenix (2019) and The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019)

June 6, 2019 – Another double feature!

Alright y’all. Dark Phoenix. I liked it. It really doesn’t deserve the horrible reviews floating around. It was very different from the classic story. And different from Last Stand. I will say that it doesn’t have the feel of being the send off for all the Fox Marvel movies. It is it’s own entity. I don’t mind that really. It would have taken away from the story. Also, as I’ve said before, it’s difficult to care too much about what happens to characters that have only been around for 1 other movie. The action was cool, the Phoenix Force is interesting. A certain “group” was cool to see because it was from the comic event. I’ll say that Jean does end her story in a more accurate way than was portrayed in Last Stand. All in all, it was an alright movie. I enjoyed it.

As one would expect for a final film in a franchise, NO mid or end-credit scenes.

(Reading this again after a couple years does have me thinking I was a little too lenient on this review, it certainly was more accurate than Last Stand was but it had different faults. Though considering I’m comparing it to the near perfection of how the X-Men animated series depicted the story, I don’t think much could do better. But if the MCU ever gets to this story, even though I don’t think we’ll see this story again for at least 20 years, I think it will be done better than both these movies did.)

Secret Life of Pets 2. I laughed so much. There was a lot going on, but it wasn’t difficult to follow the stories going on. Not much else I can say about that. I will say some stuff. THE TURKEY. Also, it was nice hearing Harrison Ford ^__^ it was a fun film.

There is mid-credit stuff. Though that was released online a while ago, but eh. Still fun.

There isn’t an end-credit scene, but, there is an end-credit sound bite from Harrison Ford’s character.

June 5, 2019

Oliver and Hal worked together, Billy’s father showed up, Slade died, DCeased continued, Luthor begins to make various villains offers of power to side with him and his machinations, Gwen had a blue furry problem, Black Cat got a new run, Luke Skywalker got a one-shot, Kamala and Peter learn to better use each other powers, and plenty of WOTR’s drama in many issues.

If I’m not mistaken, some of the variants for DCeased were based on horror movie posters (if it wasn’t for DCeased, it was certainly for something else around this time). And of course another Artgerm via Black Cat.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)

June 30, 2019 – GODZILLA!!!! I very much enjoyed it! It had a much better ratio of monster to human story. The fights were epic. The big battles were gorgeous. There were a bunch of shots that will make amazing posters. The universe they’re building was present and I loved seeing things spread out across the world. I forgot we’d had two movies in this universe before XD. The ending suggests what the next movie is.

There is NO Mid-credit scene.

There is an end-credit scene. Suggestive of thingssss. Either of why the ending suggests or for something farther down the line.

Definitely enjoyed it. If I decide to see it again, I’m gonna see it at the air & space museum. Because it is of that type of spectacle. This was in IMAX too, but it really deserves a HUGE screen.

May 29, 2019

X-Men Grand Design appeared (Grand Design comics are like little histories of marvel, containing classic stories and information about certain periods of time in marvel), Otto and Stephen had things to do, things were getting dark in AOX, The Hunted was finally ending for poor Peter, the FF and the residents of Bleecker Street went to war, Bruce wanted to solve unsolved cases, Heroes in Crisis was ending with Wally questioning himself, and Leviathan had arrived. Oh and Batman got a funky Black Label Elseworld miniseries called Last Knight on Earth set on a post-apocalyptic earth. Variants in image two.

Aladdin (2019) and Brightburn (2019)

May 23, 2019 – Alright. Double the movie tonight.

Firstly: Aladdin. I loved it! It was enough of a mix of callbacks and new ideas to work for me. I mean it still would have made more sense for Jafar to be older. But eh. I enjoyed the music a lot. I definitely was singing a bit, though it is a bit different than the original music. The beat is a bit slower on most songs. But still great. I was content with this live-action Disney movie ^__^

Mid-credit scene is just in the credits straight off from the final scene. But there is no other scene, no end-credit scene.

Secondly: Brightburn. I also enjoyed this movie. The scares were a mix of jump-scares and just horrifying situations. And there is gore. I’ll say that as a little warning. But I really liked this movie. Yeah, it basically is what if Clark Kent went bad very early on. But it’s very different in the way they go about it. It is quite chilling. If I think about times a Superman has gone bad (i.e. Red Sun, Ultraman, the Justice Lords’ Superman etc.), this was very different, not just because it’s the kid going dark. It’s something else.

Funnily enough, regarding credit scenes, it’s the same here. A mid-credit kind-of thing. It intrigued me. There is no end-credit scene.

It was a fun night!!

May 15 and 22, 2019

I put these two weeks together because in my initial twitter post I realized that I had mixed up some issues between the weeks, so it just makes sense to post them together here. It will be organized as: new comics from the 15th, then variants, and new comics from the 22nd, then variants.

Bane was in town in Batman, Rogol was besting the House of El, Damian did some bad things that his Teen Titans couldn’t forgive, Naomi found her power, a classic What If…?, Jabba the Hutt got a one-shot, the Runaways were working on things, Cable and X-Force had Stryfe problems, Miles met Tiana Toomes (yes THAT Toomes), and Stephen needed help from Clea.

Variants for the 15th:

Miguel and H-Dial continue to have villain problems (and I suppose hero problems too), the Terrifics JLD and Batman were having bad times, Clark continued to deal with the mysterious threat of Leviathan, Lando got a one-shot, OM Quill has some Shi’ar problems, while in present day the Guardians were having (literal) Hela problems; Miles and Riri had an adventure, secrets were being hidedn and revealed in AOX, while in The Hunted, Peter was in a horror movie, and War of the Realms continued the burn everything. (Keep in mind that printing delays and other such disturbances make it so some events can’t end eve if they should have by a certain time before others start, so WOTR’s is happening after most of these other stories have ended other than the X-Men stuff). Variants in image two.

May 8, 2019

Carol and the others were getting close to getting out of the bubble, Nadia and Bucky had some drama, FN Spider-Man had the most wonderful and tragic issue I’ve ever read introducing Spider-Bite, Doreen met the Asgardian god of Chaos (yes it is squirrel in shape), Agents of Atlas got a new run with various AAPI characters who have been popular or introduced in recent years (this would continue past WOTR’s), Boba Fett got a one-shot, Shazam heads into the Gamelands, JLO is having a bad time in the Ghost Sector, Hawkman summons all his other selves to help with the threat, Batman formed a (mostly) new team of The Outsiders, Supergirl searches for answers about why and how Krypton really was destroyed, the Flash gave us a miniseries within the main series going back into Flash Year One (a learning from the past to deal with the present kind of situation), and the next issue of The Batman Who Laughs. Variants in second image.

May 4, 2019

Free Comic Book Day 2019 – The first two images are the comics I got that day from the store I usually go to for FCBD and a Marvel 80 years poster. The last image are more FCBD comics I got from my normal store on May 15th when I got the first set of April comics.

Each of these 9 images were covers that some comics had as their variants during that time. All together they look amazing.

May 1, 2019

Since I got April’s issues in May, had to wait to get May’s issues in June. So these were taken on June 8.

Hal was having a time inside his ring, problems in Gemworld, Harley and Selina were hanging out, Damian wants to end Slade, DC started its DCeased Elseworld series (basically similar to Marvel Zombies but for DC), Year of the Villain had started in DC (so many events the past year had actually been connected to this one all crafted exactly how it was planned, well, mostly), everything was in general chaos, ah yes, Savage Avengers started (it’s funny, I subscribed thinking this would be a 12 issue maxiseries but it just kept going and going, it only just ended in January 2022. It was utterly worth the wait I’d even buy an omnibus), Peter and Kamala were still powers-swapped, WOTR’s bled into other titles, and Han Solo got a one-shot. Variants in photo two.

Avengers (4): Endgame

April 25, 2019 – I’m home. I’m not gonna say a lot about Endgame till Monday maybe? Convention weekend. But wow. Endgame. A decade led to everything that that movie was. Whatever comes next, I’m super ready for it. Oh and duh, I LOVED it.

This is the cup and popcorn tin I got. The tins were the of the founding avengers.

Thank you to Kevin Feige for crafting all this. Thank you for Jon Favreau for starting things off. And thanks to all the actors and film crew and writers for the MCU. The Infinity Saga was magnificent. Onto The last movie of Phase 3 in two months and one week.
