I am intrigued by old man Quentin Quire in X-Force. Grootfall is also mysterious. Hulk started a new run. Carnage Reigns continues with its penultimate issue. The Scarlet Witch annual starts off Agatha’s quest to rewrite the Darkhold in a bunch of annuals of various titles to come. Now I was surprised with this kind of event being announced, Ultimate Invasion was just unexpected. Earth-1610 was destroyed during the recent (ish) Secret Wars event. But apparently Maker has been trying to get back to it or bring it back or something for a few years now. So, I guess it’s back or at least some of the characters are back.

These are both Black Adam and Batgirls finale issues. Selena is out of prison and ready to deal with everything that has been going on in Alleytown. I’m just always happy to read a Nightwing issue. And the Dawn of DC issues continue. And finally, Wonder Woman has its 800th issue!! Very excited for that as I am to get to Flash 800 from two weeks before this.

Covers below.

This issue had some great variants. Had to get Momoko. And I am loving these negative space covers!

Peach Momoko is just so talented!

I had forgotten that some of the corner box covers would be single characters and not just the groups of character heads.

Surprisingly, This was the only variant for this that caught my eye. And this one was mainly for the color and the touch of legacy in it.

The next connecting cover.

Always happy for more from Nakayama!

As I’ve said about other covers with Conner on them, I just love his character design and that first DC comic aspect too. But this is also just a fun cover.

I’m relatively sure I have other Acuna covers, but I just really like this one. I would watch an entire DC animated show that was based in this art style.

The next of Jen Bartel’s Street Style covers. It’s just amazing isn’t it? And one of the Swimsuit variants. I think Im only going to get two or three of these. But I just liked this one.

And of course these wonderful covers!

The main cover is just nice and balanced. The second cover is by the same artist who worked on the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow maxiseries, plus the details on it are just amazing. And the foil cover is just legacy and fun. I probably will get the two latter ones slabbed.

June 14, 2023

Hello there! So, I’m still behind on reading and sorting. I have 3 piles of issues to get through before getting to this pile or the next one. Hopefully I can get through everything soon.

This Static issue is a team-up with Anansi which I am excited to read. This Batman Inc issue I’ll get to meet Joker Inc. I love that we got that DC Pride Through The Years special to get readers who may not know the history of some of the long-time LGBTQIA+ characters. Finally got a new MTG issue!

The Sons of Origins special I probably could have just picked up the variant for, but it’s nice to have these specific origin stories in one issue. Ghost Rider vs Ghost Rider should be an interesting issue (if the confrontation actually happens in this issue and not at the end like many comics have the cover scene happen). This is the last Sana Starros issue. More from Wolverine and Beasts’ conflict in Wolverine. Extreme Venomverse continues. This is the final issue of Kelly Thompson’s 50 issue run of Captain Marvel. I’m excited but sad since I really enjoy her run on the title. We have the first issue of Spider-man India, which is the first title for the character in 20 years! And of course because of his role in Across the Spider-verse movie that just came out, his #1 is out of print with a second printing on its way. T’Challa has a new run that focuses on him since he was exiled from Wakanda. I am interested to see what happens with him. The Cold War two-title event is coming to a close with its Omega issue. And Carnage Reigns got its antepenultimate issue. And finally, Marvel’s Pride special dropped. Oh and the next issue of SWI.

Covers below.

A lovely couple of Momoko covers.

I really liked this cover. I’m not sure if I have any other covers by this artist, but I certainly will keep an eye out. It’s like a painting! This will be slabbed.

I think that there are a couple of these Disney 100 covers left, but I’m not sure.

Of course the wonderful Alex Ross’s main cover art for Doctor Strange continues.

This is another Reilly windowshades cover! I love these! There was another variant that I wanted but I guest Peach Momoko changed her mind or was taken off the issue, because it wasn’t there and has disappeared from the lists. And this isn’t the only cover from these two weeks that this happened with.

This of course is the Mr. Garcin cover that I had the post of last time.

This is a wonderful Rahzzah cover! I forgot this was Rahzzah, I thought it was a BossLogic cover when I saw it in the pile.

Liefeld is doing a few homage variants, but I liked this one since I recognized it as paying tribute to Captain America (1968) 111, from March 1, 1969.

This is the next Taurin Clarke connecting cover for Carnage Reigns.

The Flash (2023)

June 12, 2023- Early screening

Holy crap. That was insane.

Okay, first off, I love this movie. There was a lot that was expected, and a lot that was unexpected. The cast did a fantastic job. The humor, the intense emotional scenes, the action, etc. was all done brilliantly. Also, it was a small cast, which helped I think.

The story was as expected essentially with a few twists here and there. And the time travel theory was different than most, so that brought new ideas to mind. Things pretty much follow what you’d think they would if your know the general plot of the Flashpoint event. But then things get even more out there. The out there stuff? Woah.

Of course the action was amazing for all the characters. The fights and the running were so well done. The fighting of each character was so specific and well shot. With so many speedsters in various comic movies and shows, it would be challenging to make things look different. And I think they did well with that. This probably would look pretty great in IMAX 3D.

The cameos? Spectacular. Some expected, others, not in a millions years did I think we’d see some of these. When the Arrowverse did their version of Crisis on Infinite Earths, I was extremely impressed with the level of and number of cameos they put in there. That still is one of my favorite realizations of a multiverse. But how they did things here was in such a creative way. I certainly hoped we’d see more, and I know that specifically, Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen was initially going to have a cameo, but that idea was dropped or cut. It’s unfortunate, but it happens.

This was just such a fun movie. The first half has hits a lot of humor, and the second half is quite intense and dramatic, but I think it worked well. Are there a couple small plot threads that have yet to be touched upon? Yes. And that excites me! There are a couple elements of Barry’s story that weren’t included in this, or at least, not yet, so, we’ll see what the future holds.

Mid-credit scene: No, but the animated credits are technically part of the movie, you’ll see. It’s fun.

End-credit scene: Yes. Also a fun scene. Points to something else going on. I hope we get to that at some point.

June 7, 2023

I can’t actually get to this issue of War College even if I were caught up since issue 4 never came in last month. I’m really enjoying this Yoda run. We got the next RotJ one-shot focusing on the Empire. Things are going crazy in Venom I suppose, and I know that the mutants aren’t enjoying the newly upgraded sentinels. I keep wondering when people will figure out what’s going on with Colossus. Loki has a new run,, his runs are always fun. This is the first prelude to the Fall of X. Events are still at it. Can’t wait to start this Peacemaker run! Still loving this Ivy run. Excited to start the Dawn of DC (it’s literally the next bunch of issues in my huge catch-up pile). This era now includes a new Steel run! And here is Flash 800! Wonder Woman 800 got pushed a week.

Covers and posters below. And now I’m all caught up! Well, caught up on posting. It will be a while before I’m caught up on reading. Though, there will be a movie post on Monday night (Tuesday morning really).

I saw this cover and I thought it just looked fun, I like all the colors ad it’s just nice.

I’ve seen this artists’ work on a few covers over the past few years, though I never really took notice till he did the main cover for Star Wars: Visions 1. It just looked great. So when I saw this, I thought I’d get it.

The next corner box cover.

The next connecting cover for this Iron Man run. I think this may be the penultimate of these covers. So it will be an 8 cover-long connecting sequence. And this is just a great cover of Riri.

Here is the second collage cover. Can’t wait to have them in one photo.

Of course there is a wonderful Artgerm cover of Lady Loki. Here is a windowshades cover confusingly by Nauck instead of Reilly. And the last cover I liked because of the legacy of the Loki’s.

The next TC connecting cover.

I’m so glad they decided to make variants of the main covers but make them poster variants.

I loved the use of white space in this cover. It just works really well.

Another Batman Artgerm! Yeah, it’s weird not doing this for a month, I’ve forgotten twice to put the same artists covers together on these posts. Oh well, I’ll get it next time.

This is just such a strong cover for a first issue. Steel is such a great.

The main cover is all legacy of Wally, so, of course, I love it! The next is another Nakayama cover, brilliant. and the third one is a foil cover. It looks gorgeous with the foil reflected in that last photo.

Now it’s time for posters! These ones were ones that I ordered specifically, so they were rolled up and not folded. This cover for this annual is gorgeous.

I always love when I see a Mr. Garcin cover. Certainly a favorite collage artist. The covers are always creatively designed and perfected represent the legacy of the artists who have come before who drew each of these characters.

I certainly didn’t expect a poster for The Flash movie! And here it is! Though the way they sent it folded was weird, the folds were in strange places.

Also unexpected! You may recognize these Dan Mora designs from a few months ago. These were in the promo art for this new era in DC and the top row of characters had all those variants for that first issue that came out then, and I’d been waiting for the younger characters to have covers and haven’t seen any hint at that happening yet. So getting these bookmarks was a nice substitute. I may frame them or something. They just look great together. I think I said this before, but I wouldn’t have minded if all the books just switched to the legacy characters at that point and the older characters took a backseat for while. Maybe the regulars have to leave earth for a long period of time and would have their own JL title (they could have started a new run of JL Odyssey) that they all shared while the legacies take over the main titles.

May 31, 2023

I enjoy Sana Starros’ title. So much going on in Silver Surfer. Though that’s nothing compared to all that’s going on in Deadpool! Avengers Beyond brought in the Black Order. I think it’s been a year or two since we last saw them, but I can’t remember exactly. Doctor Strange is all over the place, one of those said places is the Dark Dimension. This issue of Spider-man became a most contested issue because of what happens at the end. I’ve not read it of course, but I know how it ends. I agree that the death happening in another hero’s book is a weird move and a few months before a big marvel movie hitting the screens. It’s a whole complicated topic. Don’t worry I’ll get back to this topic in another post. This is the finale issue of this Punisher run. Events continue.

Seemingly Grundy shows up in Detective Comics. I enjoy Grundy. Power Girl got a special spinning out of…um…I literally forgot what she last appeared in recently that led to this special. But yeah, I’m excited for this. This Milestone showcase seems interesting. It’s debuting new writers and artists by giving them these classic characters and saying go! And last and definitely not least, there is the DC Pride special! The covers of which were all amazing (I will say that they blew Marvel out of the water with these variants compared to the Marvel Pride special variants.)!!

Another Star Wars anniversary cover! I always have to remember to keep an eye out for all these, especially when there are multiple SW anniversaries during a year, like this year. 40th for RotJ, 5th for Solo and 15th for Clone Wars. But yeah, this is great cover to represent a massive moment.

This and the Deadpool cover below it are the next Spider-verse covers. I liked how the Beyonder looks with his 90’s style look but plus Spider themed. And the Deadpool one is great because since it’s another Momoko over.

The next Alex Ross cover for Doctor Strange (I forgot to get another copy). And the last of the AAPI covers by InHyuk Lee. Whenever I get to sorting variants next, I’ll have this set of covers in one post.

The next Taurin Clarke cover.

I saw this cover and I loved it. The style is like a classic Disney movie and that makes sense with this character. I wonder if the artist has done other covers. I haven’t’ looked it up yet…ah, I have other covers by the artist, but none are in this style. I hope they do more in this style, like if Spinstress gets a title all her own.

This is the first of a duo of connecting covers. I liked how they seem to look together.

Here is the next Nakayama main cover for Gargoyles. Brooklyn looks great!

I think Artgerm said this was one of the first times or the first time he’s drawn Power Girl. It looks just as amazing as his Supergirl covers.

Magnificent DC Pride covers.

Y’all know I enjoy magazine styled covers. This just is amazing.

Jen Bartel did a spectacular job with this year’s Pride cover. They just keep asking her and she keeps saying yes. The foil looks great and the colors and everything else about this cover is amazing. This is her third cover for these Pride specials.

This is drawn by the most wonderful Gabriel Picolo. He’s had a couple covers rarely and has his own YA series of DC books focusing on the Teen Titans (based on the animated series iteration of Titans). This all spun out of him creating art and then he was noticed by DC ad now he works for them. I love this cover! All amazing characters! I can’t wait to read this year’s issue!

May 24, 2023

The Vader BWR title has been intriguing. Nick Fury has a new run. I think it’s a miniseries. Perhaps since Secret Invasion drops on Disney+ at the end of this month. Daredevil & Echo have a new run too. I think this summer was supposed to be when the Echo show was going to drop also, but then they pushed a couple shows till next year. I guess they still wanted to drum up interest. Storm got a new run set in the past. I’m still loving this JSA run. Always happy with Nightwing issues. Cyborg Superman seems to be back. Dawn of DC continues, and one of the new characters has a title, City Boy.

I remember not being sure I wanted this cover, but something about the yellow against the black and the angle she is at on the building just worked.

I got this cover because it showed one of the most detailed views of Virgil’s costume. Though, funnily enough, the color scheme is almost exactly a match to that Hellcat cover above.

I got this because it represents that era right after Superman died. And Conner was in my first DC comic, so this era is pretty important to me. Plus it was just a fantastic storyline.

Always happy for more Momoko!

The colors, the characters, the pinwheel design, there is just so much going on on this cover and I love it all.

I think I have other covers by this artist, but even if I hadn’t, this is just a very well-drawn cover. The line-work and coloring is just wonderful.

Another amazing Artgerm. Such detail!

Another color-bleed cover from Nakayama. Love those. And another cover with Red Canary! I didn’t expect her to be on another cover for a while. I love it!

May 17, 2023

Alright, I’m back with comics! So, as I said in the May 25th post, I had to pause buying comics for that week. So these next posts will be from the past 4 weeks.

And unfortunately, even with all that time, I still haven’t finished my catch up pile of comics nor gotten to the issues from May 3 and May 10. So, I have only a few days to attempt to get through 6 weeks of issues because I have a convention weekend coming up next weekend. Wish me luck!

Thus, I’ll have to generalize about all of these issues for the next few posts.

I will be excited to get to this Bounty Hunters run since I enjoy Inferno Squad. All the X-titles should be getting good because The Fall of X is coming later this year. Venom also should be ramping up because of the also upcoming Death of the Venomverse event. I’ve been enjoying Bloodline, and I’m excited that a new Blade run will be starting soon. This Hulk Annual is the issue between runs, they’re always complex. We have the new Avengers run starting. There’s a Danny Ketch story which was initially a one-shot that was delayed I think last year or the year before, I was surprised when it popped up in the previews and as a series instead. The Cold War and Carnage Reigns events are coming along. This is the 700th issue of Fantastic Four! It should be fun.

This issue of Batgirls is the penultimate issue. And these issues of Flash and Wonder Woman are both the 799th issues. This Black Adam issue is also the penultimate issue. And the Dawn of DC line of titles continues with some already going titles and now introduces four new titles. Batman the Brave and the Bold, Cyborg and Titans all got new runs. And a new group of characters got a title called The Vigil. They have popped up in a story of two recently.

When I added the Magik variant to my list there was no image of the cover. It took weeks for the cover to be uploaded, but I knew I liked Derrick Chew’s art and that he would make a great Magik cover and he did not disappoint. The other is one of the Corner Box variants. I love these!

It’s always fun when Jen Bartel does a variant for the title she’s already doing the main covers for. I think I’ve said before that I won’t be getting all the Spider-verse themed variants, but I will get the ones I enjoy. Also, these really should be called Spider-verse What If? covers since these are all What If type designs where non-Spider characters are Spider-powered characters, as oppose to the actual Spider-verse where it’s mainly Peter Parker variants as Spider-totems. Though in the recent Spider-verse event one of them was Felicia Hardy as a Spider-character, so perhaps just disregard what I just said. Haha.

I totally forgot to take the all the Spider-verse covers in one photo. This is a great cover though.

Another fantastic Momoko cover!

The next Brooks Corner Box cover, another Chew cover, and the first of the Negative Space covers (I think there are one or two that re incentive covers, so, I’ll have to wait to find and buy those to complete the collection).

I can’t wait to have all these Taurin Clarke covers together.

I was so happy that they decided to give us a collage wraparound connecting cover for this and the next issue. It will be great to have them both next to each other. I would have also enjoyed the full design as a poster.

I’ve been loving these covers for this run. Funnily enough, though, the final issue (19) doesn’t seem to have a Marquez variant for some reason.

Such a great Nakayama cover!

Okay. Rahzzah did a spectacular job with this cover. The moment I saw it in previews (or maybe it was shared online), I knew I would want this cover slabbed. This is probably in the top 10 or something of the most beautiful covers I’ve ever seen. The lighting and shading and just everything about this image is gorgeous.

Another Szerdy cover! Such a fun design of a fun character.

The A cover for this just was nice so I got another. I love how Raven looks in the background. And Jen Bartel came in and gave us the Titans in street-wear! I can’t wait to see the others!!

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023)

June 7, 2023 – Advance Screening

This was definitely a fun movie. I will say I still hold Bumblebee at the top of my Transformers movie list, but this one was enjoyable.

I loved seeing the Maximals. The designs looked great both in beast form and in maximized form. The Autobots looked as good as they always do. And the Terracons looks menacing and sleek. I did want more time with the Maximals though. I think one of them maybe spoke once? But eh, it’s not a big detractor.

The human characters were likable. I do wish there was a little bit more time with a couple of them. But I got what I needed from them character-building-wise.

The story was relatively simple. Get this, prevent this. I do wish there was a bit more fleshing out of story. And maybe a bit more threat level from the Terracons. Though if these are still canon with the first movies, then I guess they can’t get too big since most human interactions with the Transformers was around the 2000’s.

The fight scenes were of course very well done. This certainly would have looked good in 3D. And the human within the fight scenes were good too. They always do the fighting between the combatants brilliantly.

All the locations were great. The filming locations in Peru was beautiful. It was very nice to see the culture factoring into things at times.

Surprisingly, I feel like it went by too fast! I wanted more time with some of the characters. But maybe that’s just because I would have enjoyed a movie with only the Maximals in it or something with fewer characters to focus on certain ones.

I always feel like it’s difficult to do ensemble movies when you have human and non-human characters. For example, Godzilla. The balance between monster fights and human plot is delicate. Bumblebee maybe was as good as it was because it was mainly two characters, and the plot was focused on them. Maybe Transformer movies should focus on one or two bots with some kind of plot. That way we don’t have to be introduced to characters each movie that we barely know about. I’m not sure really. But I certainly don’t say that meaning that this wasn’t an enjoyable film, it was.

Basically, this was a fun movie with some heart and lots of action. I do hope that this leads to something more in the future. It certainly seems to suggest something more.

Mid-credit scene: Yes. This is the aforementioned suggesting of something more. Also quite an unexpected something. Strap in, y’all! *There is one other scene that I was reminded of, but I can’t remember if it was another mid-credit scene or an end-credit one. It’s just a fun one.

End-credit scene: Nope*. Though, if anyone stays during a normal showing, as this was an advanced screening, and there was something added, let me know!
