This new Batman arc seems intriguing. Space Dinosaurs in Shazam! We got a Valentine’s special with Guy Gardner as the main character, that should be fun, haha. The amazing Amy Jo Johnson co-wrote this MMPR miniseries “The Return”. Chris Claremont started writing a new miniseries set during one of his runs. I wonder why Stephen is on the Captain America cover. Venom is ramping up to something. Carol stops by for a visit with Jen. Gang War is soon to end. Ultimate Black Panther’s first issue dropped (the issue itself sold out everywhere really fast evidently). And Mace Windu also got a run!

There are many variants here, yes, but most of them are part of collections. The main one starting this week was the Marvel 97 or X-Men 97 variants. So, one day there will be a post in my Collections section. This issue is just here because Kamala is on it, haha.

January 2024 Late Issues 3

All but two are late issues I’d actually had on my list.

Another logo cover, nicely timed with this being this run’s final issue (which might also mean that these runs of SW comics are ending soon and we’ll start new runs post-ROTJ!).

I hadn’t added these to my list, but sometimes when you see variants in person, they just hit differently and I felt the need to get these from last month.

Well. It was better than Venom 2. It’s wasn’t an altogether bad movie, it wasn’t amazing, but I’ve seen worse movies.

There are numerous Marvel related problems (which I will vaguely mention later) all over the place, but honestly the most distracting thing was that characters just made decisions that didn’t make much sense some of the time. One that has nothing to do with plot is a camp fire was left as characters were leaving and they didn’t make sure it was out. I would think a director would think about something so simple. But again, they are small thing that just irked me.

The cast did a good job I thought. I would have enjoyed seeing them in a Marvel Studios produced version of this since it would have been more well put together. Though I can say that about all of Sony’s Marvel movies since Venom. They all kind of feel like they could all be movies on their own without any of the Marvel characters there.

Oh, and this movie was set in 2003, for no discernible, reason. And it also felt like a superhero movie that was made in 2003.

I don’t tend to notice a lot of cinematographic things while watching movies unless they really stand out, but there was some quite shaky camerawork in some scenes that I was surprised by. Like I could feel the camera moving as it rotated. Maybe that was just a quality problem with the film file or something, I’m not sure.

The plot was essentially what it was advertised as in the trailer. it just seemed like similar circumstances continue throughout the movie to put characters in danger and then it all eventually ends. Just a bit repetitive. The characterization of the girls was a bit weak, we got introduced to them and then had maybe one or two scenes learning a tiny bit about them and that’s all. And I know that this is Cassandra’s movie, but a little more character development for the girls would have been nice.

The villain. In the comics, he’s really not that important a character, and one could argue that he’s really not here. He doesn’t even have powers in the comics. But after the initial scenes with him, the movie doesn’t really give us character development of him either other than his mission throughout the movie. But we didn’t learn anything else about him at all. The actor did a good job, but the writing was just barely serviceable for his character.

I think they did an ok job with the time-powers ish, but I don’t know, something felt off about the editing. Also, I think the sound-design was a bit too loud in many scenes.

Now for the Marvel related issues. The fact that this takes place in 2003, is just odd. I don’t know why that choice was made, and all three girls being around before Spider-Man exists is just weird. Cassandra being around beforehand, sure, but the others being around is just messy. And just, wow, the origin of the powers is just totally made up. in the comics, Cassandra is a mutant. Of course they couldn’t do that origin here, but this seems to be Sony’s main problem, they keeps picking characters whose origins tie into heavy Marvel lore but Sony doesn’t have access to many of these things. For example, Venom without Spider-Man, one of the only Spidey villains whose origin directly is connected to Peter and Spidey in the comics, and Sony makes it without that aspect. I’m guessing that what they actually did was based in some actual mythology, but it just was a bit cheap. There were some other aspects that I won’t mention since they’d be more spoilery, but after watching the movie and then reading this or the other way around, you’ll probably get what I mean.

In general, it wasn’t horrible, it just was a bit chaotic. I still like this movie over Venom 2. Maybe it’s tied with Morbius. It was still fun at times, but things moved so fast that there wasn’t a lot of time to sit with characters. I would probably wait to watch this at home. But this technically should eventually connect to the other SSU movies and shows, so we’ll see what happens with these characters. Like I said, I liked the acting from everyone.

Oh, and Happy New Year! I hope that anyone who reads this had a wonderful start to 2024 even if this is being read years in the future, haha.

Of course with Black History Month both DC and Marvel have their specials. Which, wow, I didn’t realize I’d bookended them in this photo! It’s been a while since the last Avengers Inc. I’m excited for this Carnage issue since it seems to be Cletus and the Carnage symbiote clashing. This run of Doctor Aphra is over at 40 issues. Which could suggest that we may be close to ending this SW era between Episode 5 and 6. Dead X-Men, I’m not sure the plot, but I have a guess now that I’ve read 2023’s Hellfire Gala special. Always happy to have more Sabretooth, and this is a war! Another PR Unlimited special. And this is the end of the Beast World event. We got a Trinity special focusing on the offspring of the OG Trinity. I’m excited to learn about Diana’s!

I really liked this Lilo & Stitch cover, it’s just so good! Werneck did a great Hellfire cover. I had to get this Infinity Gauntlet homage cover focusing on Wolverine. This Ward cover of Batman is just nicely done. Nakayama doing his normal amazing thing with this Damian cover. Jorge Jimenez did this fantastic cover for this Trinity issue.

As usual, love these foil covers.

Love this wraparound cover for this special. Also, this was a thick book, I’m surprised it wasn’t more than $9.99.

Whoops! I forgot the posters! 8 hours later haha.

January 24, 2024

Yup, though I finally finished reading the 8 week’s worth I’ve been extremely slow getting through for these past months. So I’m in the middle of sorting comics finally! Though I’m still no where near being caught up to present day, haha.

These couple weeks were smaller than most, so that was nice. DC is quite busy in all these titles. Justice Ducks I got just because I wanted to see where the characters start out as in this story. The Thrawn Alliances novel got a comic run. Magneto returning is intriguing to me, I keep wondering how! And in my recently finished reading, I’ve been seeing some of these GODS characters popping up, so that’s been fun.

I liked the Onomatopoeia on the cover, though I didn’t think about Onomatopoeia (the character) being the person on the cover too, haha. It’s just a fun cover.

In-Hyuk Lee is just so good. I mean look at this!

Taurin Clarke and Barends are just glorious. I’ve been loving these covers.

I think it’s been a while since I’ve got a Massafera cover, this one is so good! And of course, I had to get a cover with The Living Tribunal on it.

January 17, 2024

Such a small week! Monet dropped by T’challa. I’m intrigued by Avengers Twilight! Cable got a new run for Krakoa’s end. Riri is back for a bit. The final issue of Bounty Hunters dropped. Gang war continues with MJ getting another run but under her new moniker Jackpot. DC is just busy everywhere. Those Titans and Nightwing issues are part of the Beast World event.

Such an unexpected meme to use for a Nightwing cover, haha. Riri on the cover of course. Another Leirix fantastic cover. Nakayama’s next cover is fun. And the next Bartel streetwear cover!

January 10, 2024

Yup.

Bizarro returns to Action Comics. Drama on that GL cover. I can’t wait to get to Speed Force. Beast World continues. We got the Rise of the Powers of X issue. Sabretooth War started, it’s a 10-part single title event. I’m interested in what’s going on in Avengers. Dazzler drops by Gwen. Miles got a Giant-size issue. Ultimate (Peter) Spider-Man returns as a title! And Gang War continued.

Taurin Clarke does another great cover here with Avery and Wallace.

Great covers for Beast World!

Acuña did an amazing job on Raven here.

Rise of the Powers of X covers! Can’t wait to see the connecting covers together for FotHoX and RotPoX.

A great character cover for Rasputin IV.

Love this homage cover of Logan(s). And of course Werneck being awesome drawing Wanda.

Another wonderful Bartel cover!

Love seeing all Miles’ villains’ heads on one cover. I always love design variants. It’s good to have Ultimate Peter. And I didn’t look at this Miles cover close enough and almost didn’t see that Kamala was there! Haha.

January 3, 2024

I can’t wait to get to that Batman issue. We got a Zod-focused title for the first time in the character’s history. Marvel gave us another textless animal-centered issue, this time the cats of Marvel are mostly the stars. I think this is a new Vader arc. Kid Venom got a one-shot. Stephen and the FF have a lot going on it seems. Moon Knight returns in this miniseries. And the proper beginning of the Fall of Krakoa is here!

Love this Batman cover showing the double duality. There’s Mephisto again (though this is set in the past). And look at that Galactus cover! I knew there would be one of these Masterworks covers that I’d like enough to get.

Another wonderful cover by Šejić with a little fourth-wall breaking. A fantastic Szerdy cover. And an amazing Gist cover!

Happy to have the duo of Ilyana and Kate in these variants by Artgerm and In-Hyuk Lee respectively.
